Retention – Stay Interviews

One key element of retaining people is to show genuine interest and care in them as a person, in their job satisfaction and career progression. Stay interviews can be impactful for this purpose.

Stay interviews are best when framed as ‘check-in conversations about job satisfaction’. Ideally they are conducted by the leader one level above the team members direct manager, though this depends on the size and structure of your organisation.

To achieve the intended benefit (and avoid cynicism), you need to be open to hearing things you may not know about your organisation, your team member’s experiences and their retention needs.

Usually these conversations lead to some action, changes, opportunities and it’s best to follow up down the track to retain the connection you make and check on how things are going.
